Posted October 19, 2018 06:29:52 Apple has appointed former Apple COO Eddy Cucher to be its new head of the virtual reality company Oculus VR, the Wall Street Journal reports.
Cucher will replace Oculus VR cofounder Palmer Luckey, who announced his departure on Friday, after more than a year of speculation about his future.
Luckey, a self-proclaimed “geek-at-heart” who made his name as a tech investor, led Oculus from its earliest days as a virtual reality studio.
He also helped build the popular Kickstarter crowdfunding service.
Apple has made significant changes to its mobile business in recent years, with the introduction of the iPad Pro and a new version of the iPhone, and its acquisition of Beats by Dre headphones.
Luckeys departure leaves a vacancy at the top of the company, and a lack of a clear path for its next big product launch.
Apple is also planning to release its next flagship product in 2021, after the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus.
